Vector vs. raster for signs, apparel, and large format

Choose vector paths, raster pixels, or a hybrid production file based on scale, image content, cutting, embroidery, spot color, and the output device.

Vector and raster are not competing quality levels. They represent different kinds of artwork. Vectors describe paths and shapes that can scale cleanly. Raster images describe a grid of pixels and are the natural home for photographs, paintings, textures, and many AI-generated images.

Most professional files are hybrid: vector type and logos placed over properly sized raster imagery. The right choice depends on whether the device prints pixels, cuts a path, separates spot colors, or translates shapes into stitches.

Keep geometry as vectors when scale or tooling matters

Logos, lettering, simple icons, cut contours, and flat-color shapes benefit from vectors. A sign can scale from a decal to a storefront without rebuilding edges, and a cutter can follow a clean path. Spot-color separations and named production paths are easier to manage when geometry remains explicit.

Clean vectors use intentional curves, closed shapes where required, sensible node counts, and correct overlaps. Automatic tracing may create rough edges, holes, and thousands of unnecessary points. Inspect the result as production geometry, not only as a small preview.

Use raster artwork for continuous-tone imagery

Photographs, shaded illustrations, paint texture, and most generated scenes belong in raster form. Their quality depends on effective resolution at output size, compression, and color handling. Embedding a raster image in SVG, EPS, or PDF does not turn its pixels into vectors.

For large format, choose resolution based on size and viewing distance. For direct-to-garment or product decoration, follow the provider's pixel dimensions, transparency, color space, and print-area template. Preserve an uncompressed or lossless source before creating upload versions.

Treat embroidery digitizing as a separate craft

An embroidery machine needs stitches, not ordinary vector paths. Digitizing assigns stitch types, direction, density, underlay, compensation, sequence, and trims for the garment and placement. A clean vector logo is an excellent reference but not automatically a sew-ready file.

Small text, thin lines, gradients, and tight detail may need production simplification. A hat and a left-chest garment can require different digitizing because their construction and embroidery fields differ. Approve a sew-out or production proof where the result matters.

Build a handoff the next person can verify

A production-ready handoff should contain one clearly named current file, the finished dimensions, the expected bleed, and a short record of what was checked. If a warning remains, describe the decision instead of hiding it. For example: the customer accepted 170 effective PPI because the banner will be viewed from across a room. That note is more useful than a folder containing five unexplained exports.

Keep the editable source separate from the approved output. The source is where future changes belong; the approved PDF, PNG, TIFF, SVG, or machine file is the artifact that moves into production. When a revision arrives, create a new version and preserve the approval trail. This small discipline prevents an old attachment, an unapproved crop, or a mystery color conversion from becoming the file that gets printed. It also gives estimating, customer service, prepress, and production the same answer when a job returns.
